A message from Co-ordinator, Tim Regan
Welcome to the Physics section of the website

Physics Support September – December 2004

The following modes of support are on offer to physics teachers for the coming year.

  • Issues of the magazine ‘Physical Sciences’ will be circulated to all schools during this academic year. I would welcome articles for the magazine, which may be forwarded to me at timregan@slss.ie.
  • A consultation service by phone, fax or email is available.
  • The updated Physical Sciences website, www.slss.ie contains valued resources and news of upcoming in-service and events. We invite you to log on and update your email address if you wish to be informed by email of upcoming in-service events.
  • A limited number of school visits, resources permitting.
  • Regional network meetings.
  • Modular courses.

The modular courses focus on the teaching of the syllabus in the classroom. They will also establish a process of dialogue in which participants reflect on their own practice over time and share the outcomes of these reflections with a group of interested colleagues. The following modular courses were offered during the first term:

Teachers who applied for these courses and were subsequently offered places have committed to attending on three days spread through terms 1 & 2. The final day of each course will be arranged in the teacher’s own time. Participants in these courses, who satisfactorily complete a “Link-in Module”, may earn accreditation towards postgraduate study at Masters level at the University of Limerick and Dublin City University. Participants may also receive credit towards the M.Ed(Sc) Degree in University College Cork. Further details on the modular courses are available by following the above links and in the ‘Support Services For Post Primary Education’ brochure (pages 3-18) which have been forwarded to your school.

courseware contains background material on the revised syllabus and an introduction to data logging.
practicals & demos contain information on the experiments listed in the syllabus as well as some data logging experiments.
resources contain evaluated physics resources and some ideas on student learning activities, the 'Teacher's Reference Handbook' CD ROM and the oscilloscope.

Resources
Particle Physics CD
This interactive multimedia CD covers the particle physics option on the syllabus. The CD also includes additional resources on the topic. Please note the correction indicated on the back of the CD envelope.

Laboratory Equipment Database CD
This CD contains an Access 2000 database designed to record information on laboratory equipment. An Excel spreadsheet equivalent is also provided. Notes on using the database along with a sample database for both the Access and Excel versions are in the “Samples” folder on the CD.

Applied Electricity CD
This CD contains a wide range of material on applied electricity and resources. It has units on the prescribed experiments, demonstrations, datalogging, resources, the oscilloscope, particle physics, STS and much more. It contains all the material given to teachers during the in-service programme (1999-2002).
